Get Free EstimatePressure-treated wood is still the right call for a lot of Licking County homeowners. Lower upfront cost, straightforward maintenance, and a look that fits older homes and properties where composite can feel out of place. Done right — with proper footings, correct lumber grades, and quality hardware — a PT wood deck lasts 20 to 30 years.
The problems we see come from shortcuts: undersized footings, incorrect lumber grades, hardware that rusts out in 5 years, and joists that were never spaced right. We don't take shortcuts. Every wood deck we build is framed to hold, footed below the frost line, and built to pass inspection.
The single biggest difference between a wood deck that lasts 25 years and one that fails in 10 is footing depth. Ohio's frost line sits at 32 inches. We see decks every spring that have heaved because footings didn't go deep enough. We don't cut that corner.
Every wood deck we build uses the same structural approach: poured concrete piers at each post, double-rim joists, and a ledger connection bolted through the house rim joist with proper flashing to keep water out.
We use premium Southern Yellow Pine throughout — denser and stronger than the hem-fir you'll find at the big box store. For hardware we specify hot-dipped galvanized or stainless everywhere wood contacts the ground or will be exposed to moisture.
We get calls every year from homeowners whose wood deck “only needed boards” until we pull one up and find joists that are soft all the way through. The surface can look fine when the structure underneath is failing. We scope the whole thing before we quote.
