Pressure-treated wood is still the right call for a lot of Licking County homeowners. Lower upfront cost, straightforward maintenance, and a look that fits older homes and properties where composite can feel out of place. Done right — with proper footings, correct lumber grades, and quality hardware — a PT wood deck lasts 20 to 30 years.
The problems we see come from shortcuts: undersized footings, incorrect lumber grades, hardware that rusts out in 5 years, and joists that were never spaced right. We don't take shortcuts. Every wood deck we build is framed to hold, footed below the frost line, and built to pass inspection.
The single biggest difference between a wood deck that lasts 25 years and one that fails in 10 is footing depth. Ohio's frost line sits at 32 inches. We see decks every spring that have heaved because footings didn't go deep enough. We don't cut that corner.
